Idle Chattering

September 23, 2008

Just a heads up. It seems my pictures of the 1100 Club National Rally are to appear in the next edition of the 1100 club’s magazine “Idle Chatter”, cool! You get the magazine as part of the 1100 club membership package, so if you join now you may get this issue. You can join here!

1100 National Rally - 2008

September 1, 2008

It was a last minute decision. Dare we flog all the way up to Avoncroft just to get absolutely soaked through by the torrential rain that was forcast? When we got up and looked out the window early on Sunday morning I couldn’t see anything, there was a blanket of fog. “Well that may mean good weather then” thought I. So off we went and by the time we had reached Gaydon, the fog had gone and the sun was streaming down. However, another 30 minutes or so later,  we pulled into the car park at the Avoncroft Museum, and the heavens opened.

Still at least we had bought brollies and hats! As we made our way in to the show field we could see that the judging had already begun in earnest. We looked for friendly faces (ignoring the unfriendly ones…..no I won’t go there) First we met Fernand. He had his lovely Austin estate in the field complete with press cuttings book. The car has been earning it’s keep by being hired out for some” Fawlty Towers” promotions and the like and  even carried Prunella Scales (Sibyl Fawlty) to a grand opening of a hotel in Torquay (supposedly the home of Fawlty Towers).

My husband, Nobby, made himself very useful, in very kindly taking pictures of all the cars in the field for me. There were lots of familiar cars and also a few I hadn’t seen before. I had chats with old friends, Mercedes, Tony Cole, Chris, Robbie, Steve Beard (busy judging) and Nick Laidlaw (who had very kindly helped me with repairs to my own car a few years back) I don’t get to shows and stuff much anymore so it was really lovely seeing them all again.

While the judging and talks were on we all went for a walk around the museum. There was some interesting stuff on show but old buildings aren’t really my cup of tea. As the rain didn’t really let up all day, we called it a day early on. The pictures are below see if you can spot yours.

Get Your Number - Be Quick!

August 10, 2008

You don’t often get the chance to choose your own mobile number, let alone one which is relevant to your favourite car. However, if you are in the UK and very quick, you can grab a mobile number ending in 1300 from FamilyMobile (IKEA PAYG) just sign up and choose your number. The sim is free (with a £10 initial topup) but you could port away if you wish. Calls are 9p per minute & texts are 6p, so are good value. I now have a 1300 number for business to match the 1100 personal number I’ve had for years. (How sad is that!)

I Knew This Day Would Come!

July 7, 2008

The picture is self explanatory. Our eldest, who was only 3 years old when I bought George, is now old enough to drive He has shown more than a passing interest in owning his own 1100 too, so he has put the feelers out amongst the 1100 crowd. I know he would love a GT, but then, so would his insurance company, so for the moment, he is going to have to settle for something more lowly. Maybe one day I will give him the keys to George for keeps, and if he doesn’t want George, I’ve got a couple of years to work on his little brother!

A Practical Classic

April 23, 2008

You may have noticed that I haven’t really been posting on this blog recently. I have to admit that finally my interest in all things ado is finally abating. No…. I hear you cry. Don’t worry I still have George, but I just don’t have as much time as I would like to spend ado’ing.

Likewise I haven’t been buying car magazines, except today I found the latest Practical Classics (May 2008) (darn smilies) on display at the supermarket. “Is that a Wolseley?” says I, not only that but “Isn’t that Chris Jones in the driver’s seat!” I quickly looked inside to read about Chris’ rather nice looking car (albeit with a Metro engine). Also in the article is an Alvis 21. I have liked those ever since a neighbour of mine showed me his beautiful red 21. Sweet!

eBay Addiction Continues

January 28, 2008

Love it, loathe it, but eBay does feed my various addictions, be they gadget or auto based. This time I have picked up a set of the Jack Brabham 1100  car care cards I have been looking out for, for a while. Everytime I thought I had put in an unbeatable bid (ie, way too much) I was beaten. However this time, my bid for pence won! Must be the post Christmas malaise kicking in. The other thing no else bid on was an A3 sized workshop servicing chart for the 1100. Nice items both.

The Secret Life of the Motorway BBC 1 Wednesday

January 8, 2008

MG 1100 on a day out.

Just flicking through stuff on the BBC iPlayer and came across this gem. Of course there were 1100s to see whipping up and down, so I will be tuning in for the rest of the series.

Bible Black - Night Drive

September 29, 2007

I can’t really say I’m a fan of VW apart from the long held lust for a split screen Samba (but that is for another time). However, I do have a weakness for the poetry of Dylan Thomas and when I was sent this link for VW’s latest TV ad I had to take a look. Click on the TV ad link at the top of the box and 90 second ad at the bottom of the box for best effect. Richard Burton’s silky smooth narration of a part of “Under Milk Wood” is so hypnotic I wouldn’t dare listen to it whilst driving just in case I ended up somebody’s rear end……….ooh Matron!

Slipping into bad habits

August 29, 2007

Sorry about the lack of posts recently. I’m not slipping into my old lazy habits. Just a few computer related problems lately combined with my summer holiday duties as family taxi driver have squeezed my spare time to zilch.
